BANNOCKBURN; Remember It??

This week with mid-summer upon us we recall one of the conflicts which went a long way in re-asserting Scotland’s right as an Independent Nation. Over two days 23rd and 24th of June 1314 the might of the english invaders were routed on ground close to the modern day town of Bannockburn.

If you had gone to school in Scotland prior to the 1990’s you may have witnessed lessons in History which dwelled on the events which led to the creation of the so called Bayeaux Tapestry. This piece of cloth depicting the emergence of the aristocratic Normans of Northern France into the History books of the Anglo Saxon seemed to take a large piece of our Historical learning in Scotland (WHY?). The story of the “Wars of Independence” was largely glossed over or passed by to stories of Harold, Arrows and a Conqueror called William. The strangest parts of the glossing over of this story were the hard facts of Hastings and all that…. France versus Germany and in modern day england a St George’s cross now flutters from a pole near Hastings village??

Of course Scotland was not spared the Anglic invasions nor were we spared the Norman aristocracy that followed and our hard fact is that we now speak the same Germanic dialect they call english. This despite asserting our Independence following the Independence Wars and remaining so until being finally swallowed up in 1707 by the descendants of the very same aristocratic Normans and the Germanic tribes that occupied most of what is south of our border.

But at least we remember the sacrifice made in the Independence Wars and have done throughout the ages since. Whether from Barbour’s epic, “The Brus”. Even King James III carried Bruce’s two handed sword onto the field of Sauchieburn as a talisman in June 1488. Robert Burns was to pen an unofficial National Anthem, Scots Wha Hae. “See approach proud Edwards power, chains and slavery” in the 1790’s. Claiming it as Bruce’s speech before the Battle of Bannockburn as sung here by The Corries.

Its good to remember events in your History and in Scotland there is not many as fitting as The Battle of Bannockburn. Always remember it as the long nights of Scotland’s daylight never close. Remember the ultimate goal of the invaders was the making of Scotland a medieval province of an aristocratic feudalised State. Remember the stand made by many of the lower classes of this medieval Scotland, yet to be a Nation on that field. Does that not remind you of a certain London Rule of 300 or so years? Possibly the reason why they hide it from our children…..

Remember Bannockburn, 23rd-24th of June……..1314.

We will never forget it ever…

Next issue we hope to discuss the way in which Scotland became assimilated into a Hanoverian Britain through its own landed gentry and clan chiefs. With that thought we leave this reminder of the great day that was Bannockburn with some poignant words from our own bard…….Bha Uair Beò (There Once Lived)

Bha Uair Beò

Bha uair beò air ar beul,

Ar cuid cainnt, dril nar neul,

Ar cuid comas ri ciall

There Once Lived

There once lived on our lips,

Our own speak, the spark in our cloud,

Our ability to discern,

Now lost in mist

Lost in mist before a noisy box,

Full of silly Englishmen,

An obsession and strong,

Missing the vital spark of life

Without spark and without direction,

Though our world be motorwayed,

Down hard channels our blood,

Soul and fire

Soul and fire, they’ve put out,

Backs crooked under hardship,

Giving a funeral to the ‘Grey Gael’

Who once lived

  1. Funny thing is it was Scotland which pressured for the union after the country was bankrupted by a failed attempt to buld an empire.
Even funnier (which isn't much discussed in nationalist circles) is the fact that Scots wholeheartedly embraced the slave trade, indeed Scotland was rebuilt with the profits from slavery.
So who wants to be free from whom?

  2. Aha you must be a teacher of British History. That's the type of thing they taught in Scotland's schools. Not much wrong with your facts but it fails to state the real reasons behind the facts (a british history lesson!);
Who bankrupted The Darrien expedition in the first place; A british monarchy that had sat in London since 1603. On the 1707 union, Scotland inherited england's national debt and our noble breed took england's gold, no democratic vote whilst the masses rioted in the street. And even funnier is that the Scots that you talk about embracing the slave trade were just the same as all the other races of the period and by which time they had become british. Scotland was never re-built. It was cleared by so called improver's. Towns industrialised to feed the british state that sat in London. And in the background a sustained effort by the british to destroy a National identity and culture. We know we still have those among us who are traitors to the Nation that is Scotland and these are the ones holding Scotland back.
Scotland want's Free from Britain!! Simple; Scottish Not British; End London Rule and Free England!!!

  3. Something that confuses me slightly about this article is the fact that Britain/British is in fact originally a word used to describe the geographical Island of Great Britain and the Island of Ireland. If you are attempting to make an argument against United Kingdom rule then I suggested you make that clear, because from this article you seem to be suggesting a massive atomic attack along the border of Scotland and England, thus separating Scotland from the Island of Great Britain, and making your own independent island. I have nothing against this other than the pollution it would cause, but would prefer to know exactly what you mean. Subsequently you cannot complain if people mistakenly call you British/Welsh/Irish/English if you yourself cannot get the correct geographical terms right!

If you mean the former (separating Scotland from the United Kingdom) then I beleive it is your obligation to state so, primarily because, as somebody who has Scottish/English and Welsh blood running through my veins, I know full well that Individuals in each country within the United Kingdom get frustrated at being labeled by another countries nationality. By proclaiming Scottish people are not British you are unarguably wrong, and completely disregarding the inexplicable link between all peoples of Great Britain and Ireland. Whether you like it or not it is biologically proven that all 'indigenous' British people are in fact quite closely related.

You may now state that by looking back so far into history I am being difficult, however I would suggest the same to you. Whilst you have made some very good points, and I am sure will continue to do so, you seem to have the naive belief that by separating yourself from a united group of countries that have stronger economies together and a long cultural and social heritage, you will in fact create a better country. I will state now that this is fantastical. Rather than looking back into the past, trying to build a new version of the old independent Scotland, I suggest you actually look to the future and concentrate on building a Scotland that utilizes the connections it has created and maintained through its alliance with the United Kingdom! Whether you or I like it the future of politics will most certainly involve a completely united Europe, that will be ruled by a central government. This may take hundreds of years, it may happen in my lifetime, but making Scotland independent will leave it high and dry in a social and economical downturn. Scotland does not unfortunately have the strength at this time (it may hopefully do in the future) to stand alone.

Before you ask I am not a teacher, and I am not English and I am not a naive and disillusioned individual, I am merely somebody with an opposing opinion who may change their mind on the subject.

Last point, I don't know whether you have forgotten this, or it was not deemed worth mentioning, but the person who united Scotland and England and Whales was in fact a Scottish king, it was a Scottish King who decided to bring his parliament to London, if he had stayed in Scotland the United Kingdom would be ruled from Edinburgh. Whenever I hear about Scottish Independence it saddens me, because rather than being about the country and the people (which at the moment it can't be because becoming independent would mean self destruction), it is about historical grudges that should be discussed properly rather than through angry protests against a government that works with and for all four nations. If you wish to make a stand point I would suggest you also add to your protest for an independent English government. It is the English people within the United Kingdom I feel sorry for, they have no representation independent of the United Kingdom government, they are completely controlled by all four nations.

  4. Wow.......You really are confused.....That is the longest comment ever seen.
    Just a quick reply.
Thank you for taking the time to read the blog it is most appreciated. We would urge you to read other posts on the blog it might explain some of your queries.
We certainly know all about the ancient name of Britain. We also know quite a lot about the cultural differences of this island borne out by its borders. We are anti-nuclear therefore totally against atomic warfare or nuclear power. No need for anything else to happen to the Scottish border at all, it rightly states, Failte gu Alba or Welcome to Scotland.
You are so confused that you fail to grasp that being Scottish is nothing at all to do with anything British in its modern tense. In fact in recent times these modern day Brits tried to rename Scotland, North Britain!!!!
History tells us the facts. Historical facts are told as they are wanted to be heard. As schoolchildren in Scotland our history was kept from us or told to us in such a way as it ignored the true facts of events that took place. It kidded us on that Britain was one and the same and that an english person was the same as a Scotsman
We are well aware of the tragedy to Scotland that was 1603 and well aware of the fact that the persecution of those that were different transferred itself from Edinburgh to London along with the “Wisest Fool” and his decendants. We now have Westminster and Hanover where once we had Edinburgh and Stewart as persecutors. The legacy of Anglo Normanist and Saxon expansionism.
Where else in the world does a Nation have its affairs voted on by over 500 politicians of another country in a City miles from the cultural centre of its soul. Scotland is a Nation!! and all we ask is for Scotland to have its own say in its running. Britain as you see it is finished, doomed, burst, sunk like the empire it once spawned.
Tacitus once wrote that Calgacus that great leader of the Caledons who stood and faced the might of the Roman Empire said “ WE THE MOST DISTANT DWELLERS UPON EARTH, THE LAST OF THE FREE, HAVE BEEN SHIELDED TILL TODAY BY OUR REMOTENESS AND BY THE OBSCURITY THAT HAS SHROUDED OUR NAME”
We say to you...FREE ENGLAND AND GIVE SCOTLAND BACK TO SCOTLAND, THE LAND OF THE FREE!!
Hope you keep reading...............End London Rule...........
